Drafting with me #4 – ZZZ

December 6, 2009

Another MODO draft walk through for your pleasure. I think this draft was pretty interesting because while I crushed the draft (2-0, 2-0, 2-0)  I did a couple of wrong picks in the draft. Let check them out, shall we?

Pack 1 pick 1:
–> Giant Scorpion
    Demolish
    Pillarfield Ox
    Beast Hunt
    Shoal Serpent
    Hellfire Mongrel
    Molten Ravager
    Grim Discovery
    Paralyzing Grasp
    Vines of Vastwood
    Ruinous Minotaur
    Archive Trap
    Merfolk Wayfinder
    Trailblazer’s Boots
    Plains

This was a very weak starting pack. The choice boiled down for me between Giant Scorpion or Hellfire Mongrel. I think they are pretty similar when it comes to powerlevel but personally I rank black as a color higher than red so went with Giant Scorpion here. Picking Giant Scorpion here does also basically cut all the black in this pack, which is nice.

Pack 1 pick 2:
    Kabira Crossroads
    Hagra Diabolist
    Greenweaver Druid
    Hagra Crocodile
    Noble Vestige
    Mold Shambler
    Hedron Scrabbler
    Tempest Owl
–> Windrider Eel
    Mindless Null
    Seascape Aerialist
    Swamp
    Spell Pierce
    Zektar Shrine Expedition

Yet another shallow pack. Here the choice for me was between Hagra Diabolist and Windrider Eel and Windrider Eel won the toss-up due it’s just a better card on its own. This reasoning might seem strange consider the last pick, but I think Windrider Eel significantly better than the Diabolist in an abstract which makes it legit to take the blue card here.

Pack 1 pick 3:
    Tanglesap
    Greenweaver Druid
    Crypt Ripper
–> Tuktuk Grunts
    Ior Ruin Expedition
    Kraken Hatchling
    Turntimber Grove
    Caravan Hurda
    Goblin Bushwhacker
    Makindi Shieldmate
    Seascape Aerialist
    Elemental Appeal
    Swamp

Here was another interesting pack. Crypt Ripper is really nice if you have a black heavy deck, but very mediocre otherwise. At this point we can’t tell if we will end up black or not. So here Tuktuk Grunts was a little safe pick. If I pick Tuktuk Grunts here and doesn’t end up playing red, I have only wasted 1 pick. On the other hand, I pick Crypt Ripper and we get cut out of black we have wasted 2 cards instead.

Pack 1 pick 4:
    Quest for Pure Flame
    Ruinous Minotaur
    Æther Figment
    Vastwood Gorger
    Spidersilk Net
    Island
    Teetering Peaks
    Reckless Scholar
    Kor Hookmaster
    Explorer’s Scope
    Ior Ruin Expedition
–> Surrakar Marauder

Not much to say here, Surrakar Marauder is the best card in our 3 colors so far. Only Kor Hookmaster might trump it overall anyways so Marauder it is.

Pack 1 pick 5:
    Timbermaw Larva
    Kor Cartographer
    Æther Figment
    Cliff Threader
    Territorial Baloth
    Paralyzing Grasp
–> Heartstabber Mosquito
    Bladetusk Boar
    Piranha Marsh
    Plains
    Unstable Footing

Here was another though one. Bladetusk Boar is better than Heartstabber Mosquito in abstract therefore it was a hard choice here. Once again I took the safe route and picked the black card. Heartstabber is a little slow in drafts but still a fine card in my opinion.

Pack 1 pick 6:
    Cobra Trap
–> Vampire Lacerator
    Goblin War Paint
    Kraken Hatchling
    Forest
    Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle
    Mark of Mutiny
    Blood Seeker
    Nissa’s Chosen
    Jwar Isle Refuge

Pack 1 pick 7:
    Forest
    Sejiri Refuge
    Bold Defense
    Makindi Shieldmate
    Tanglesap
    Piranha Marsh
    Goblin War Paint
    Timbermaw Larva
–> Guul Draz Vampire

Pack 1 pick 8:
    Goblin Shortcutter
    Plains
    Vampire Lacerator
    Tanglesap
–> Hagra Diabolist
    Spreading Seas
    Lavaball Trap
    Lethargy Trap

I took Hagra Diabolist since it’s a decent ally and either blue or red does have a fair amount of good allies which is easy to access later on in the draft. I’m not sure I liked this pick in retrospect, the Vampire Lacerator would have been a tad better…

Pack 1 pick 9:
    Demolish
    Beast Hunt
    Shoal Serpent
    Grim Discovery
–> Ruinous Minotaur
    Merfolk Wayfinder
    Plains

Pack 1 pick 10:
    Noble Vestige
    Tempest Owl
–> Mindless Null
    Seascape Aerialist
    Swamp
    Spell Pierce

Pack 1 pick 11:
    Tanglesap
–> Kraken Hatchling
    Turntimber Grove
    Seascape Aerialist
    Swamp

Pack 1 pick 12:
    Ruinous Minotaur
    Island
–> Reckless Scholar
    Ior Ruin Expedition

Pack 1 pick 13:
–> Æther Figment
    Piranha Marsh
    Plains

Pack 1 pick 14:
    Forest
–> Blood Seeker

Very interesting card we have received here at pick 12, 13 and 14. While not super good they are easily playables for sure. Looks like blue is the color we want to go with our black.

Pack 1 pick 15:
–> Forest

—— ZEN ——

Pack 2 pick 1:
    Slaughter Cry
    Kor Outfitter
    Geyser Glider
    Primal Bellow
    Journey to Nowhere
    Bog Tatters
    Scalding Tarn
    Island
–> Gatekeeper of Malakir
    Bold Defense (FOIL)
    Trapfinder’s Trick
    Sky Ruin Drake
    Adventuring Gear
    Highland Berserker
    Beast Hunt

A very good pack here. I like Geyser Gilder over Gatekeeper of Malakir in an abstract but our late gifts we received in pack 1 indicates that we probably want to go with blue as our splash color. Sticking with the black card here therefore.

Pack 2 pick 2:
    Bog Tatters
–> Nimana Sell-Sword
    Vastwood Gorger
    Gigantiform
    Adventuring Gear
    Cancel
    Shepherd of the Lost
    Swamp
    Whiplash Trap
    Shieldmate’s Blessing
    Slaughter Cry
    Kor Outfitter
    Beast Hunt
    Gomazoa

Toss up here between the Sell-Sword and Whiplash Trap. I have no clue what the correct pick here really is and I just went with my gut feeling on this one.

Pack 2 pick 3:
    Harrow
    Trailblazer’s Boots
    Lethargy Trap
    Seismic Shudder
–> Blazing Torch
    Soaring Seacliff
    Blood Seeker
    Hedron Scrabbler
    Plains
    Ravenous Trap
    Kor Sanctifiers
    Spire Barrage
    Ondu Cleric

Pack 2 pick 4:
    Timbermaw Larva
    Explorer’s Scope
    Into the Roil
    Kor Hookmaster
    Territorial Baloth
    Bold Defense
    Plains
    Ruinous Minotaur
–> Hideous End
    Ior Ruin Expedition
    Kor Duelist
    Bloodchief Ascension

4th pick Hideous End, we like! Bloodchief Ascension is not that exciting as it looks, particular for us right here since our deck looks to be a little more controlling than aggressive at this point.

Pack 2 pick 5:
    Mire Blight
    Sunspring Expedition
    Quest for Pure Flame (FOIL)
–> Heartstabber Mosquito
    Slaughter Cry
    Scythe Tiger
    Akoum Refuge
    Mountain
    Joraga Bard
    Shoal Serpent
    Devout Lightcaster

Pack 2 pick 6:
    Kor Outfitter
    Swamp
    Spell Pierce
    Savage Silhouette
    Grim Discovery
    Relic Crush
–> Khalni Gem
    Bog Tatters
    Frontier Guide (FOIL)
    Hagra Crocodile

Khalni Gem got the nod over Hagra Crocodile here since our deck wants to reach 7 mana to cast kicked Heartstabber Mosquito and Khalni Gem is an excellent way to getting there.

Pack 2 pick 7:
    Sejiri Refuge
    Goblin War Paint
    Ruinous Minotaur
–> Heartstabber Mosquito (FOIL)
    Paralyzing Grasp
    Blood Seeker
    Nissa’s Chosen
    Emeria, the Sky Ruin
    Plains

Pack 2 pick 8:
    Soaring Seacliff
    Vampire’s Bite
–> Crypt Ripper
    Spell Pierce
    Quest for Ancient Secrets
    Swamp
    Relic Crush
    Mindless Null

Pack 2 pick 9:
    Kor Outfitter
    Primal Bellow
–> Bog Tatters
    Island
    Trapfinder’s Trick
    Highland Berserker
    Beast Hunt

Decent sideboard card.

Pack 2 pick 10:
    Bog Tatters
    Cancel
    Swamp
    Shieldmate’s Blessing
    Beast Hunt
–> Gomazoa

Potentially maindeck card over sideboard card here.

Pack 2 pick 11:
    Trailblazer’s Boots
    Seismic Shudder
–> Soaring Seacliff
    Plains
    Ravenous Trap

Pack 2 pick 12:
    Explorer’s Scope
    Plains
    Ior Ruin Expedition
–> Bloodchief Ascension

Pack 2 pick 13:
    Mire Blight
–> Akoum Refuge
    Mountain

Pack 2 pick 14:
    Swamp
–> Grim Discovery

Pack 2 pick 15:
–> Plains

—— ZEN ——

Pack 3 pick 1:
    Windrider Eel
    Desecrated Earth
    Inferno Trap
    Mountain
    Shatterskull Giant
    Savage Silhouette
–> Misty Rainforest
    Stonework Puma
    Narrow Escape
    Hagra Crocodile
    Kazandu Refuge
    Trapmaker’s Snare
    Journey to Nowhere
    Lethargy Trap
    Nissa’s Chosen

Rare drafting here. Misty Rainforest is just too much value to pass up and we will probably end up playing in our draft deck aswell.

Pack 3 pick 2:
    Spreading Seas
    Seismic Shudder
    Nissa’s Chosen
    Kor Hookmaster
    Carnage Altar
    Spidersilk Net
    Caravan Hurda
    Guul Draz Vampire
    Goblin Shortcutter
    Baloth Cage Trap
    Oran-Rief Recluse
    Oracle of Mul Daya
–> Surrakar Marauder
    Forest

Pack 3 pick 3:
    Sky Ruin Drake
    Living Tsunami
    Pillarfield Ox
    Slaughter Cry (FOIL)
–> Umara Raptor
    Territorial Baloth
    Vines of Vastwood
    Kor Cartographer
    Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle
    Nimana Sell-Sword
    Explorer’s Scope
    Quest for Pure Flame
    Mountain

This was also a though one. Living Tsunami is the best card in the pack, but Umara Raptor will be a better fit for our deck. Our deck looks to be crammed with 4-drops at this point so a 3-drop is welcomed.

Pack 3 pick 4:
    Spreading Seas
    Adventuring Gear
    Cliff Threader
    Forest
    Feast of Blood
    Runeflare Trap
    Guul Draz Vampire
    Savage Silhouette
–> Giant Scorpion
    Reckless Scholar
    Caravan Hurda
    Nissa’s Chosen

Pack 3 pick 5:
    Forest
–> Kor Hookmaster
    Caller of Gales
    Seismic Shudder
    Caravan Hurda
    Turntimber Grove
    Goblin War Paint
    Vampire Lacerator
    Needlebite Trap
    Kraken Hatchling
    Soaring Seacliff

I hate drafted a Kor Hookmaster here over a Vampire Lacerator, which I regret. I overestimated the number of playables I had in my pool at this point so that’s why I took Kor Hookmaster.

Pack 3 pick 6:
    Relic Crush
    Mountain
–> Marsh Casualties
    Heartstabber Mosquito
    Frontier Guide
    Surrakar Marauder
    Scythe Tiger
    Nimbus Wings
    Trapfinder’s Trick
    Vampire’s Bite

Well, if it isn’t a 6th pick Marsh Casualties! Slammed.

Pack 3 pick 7:
    Seismic Shudder
    Hagra Crocodile
    Guul Draz Vampire
    Mountain
–> Windborne Charge
    Gomazoa
    Quest for the Gemblades
    Goblin Shortcutter
    Spreading Seas

This hate draft I like more with the key in hand than the last one. Our deck looks to be very saucy at this point and a card like Windborne Charge is a card we might legitimate loose to regardless.

Pack 3 pick 8:
    Goblin Bushwhacker
–> Quest for the Gravelord
    Sky Ruin Drake
    Pillarfield Ox
    Hedron Scrabbler
    Nimana Sell-Sword
    Blood Seeker
    Mountain

This is a bit controversal pick. I really like Quest for the Gravelord (particular with multiple Giant Scorpions) so that why it got the nod over Sky Ruin Drake. I’m not mentioning Nimana Sell-Sword because of the curve issues I mentioned earlier.

Pack 3 pick 9:
    Desecrated Earth
    Mountain
    Savage Silhouette
–> Hagra Crocodile
    Trapmaker’s Snare
    Lethargy Trap
    Nissa’s Chosen

Pack 3 pick 10:
–> Spreading Seas
    Carnage Altar
    Spidersilk Net
    Caravan Hurda
    Guul Draz Vampire
    Forest

Pack 3 pick 11:
–> Sky Ruin Drake
    Slaughter Cry (FOIL)
    Nimana Sell-Sword
    Explorer’s Scope
    Mountain

See pick 8th for the explanation on this one.

Pack 3 pick 12:
–> Spreading Seas
    Forest
    Feast of Blood
    Runeflare Trap

Pack 3 pick 13:
–> Forest
    Caller of Gales
    Turntimber Grove

Pack 3 pick 14:
–> Scythe Tiger
    Trapfinder’s Trick

Pack 3 pick 15:
–> Mountain

The deck:

1x Vampire Lacerator
1x Kraken Hatchling
2x Surrakar Marauder
2x Giant Scorpion
1x Umara Raptor
1x Gomazoa
1x Gatekeeper of Malakir
1x Reckless Scholar
1x Windrider Eel
1x Nimana Sell-Sword
1x Crypt Ripper
3x Heartstabber Mosquito
1x Sky Ruin Drake
1x Aether Figment
1x Khalni Gem
1x Blazing Torch
1x Hideous End
1x Marsh Casualties
1x Quest for the Gravelord
1x Grim Discovery
10x Swamp
6x Island
1x Misty Rainforest

I don’t have much to say about deck construction. With the Khalni Gem I thought I would manage with 17 lands, without it however I would have played 18 for sure with this deck. Then 22 of the cards was easy to pick out and then I pondered a bit about what options I had. Gruul Draz Vampire didn’t seem to contribute the deck too much, I already have many ways to get through for damage. Hagra Crocodile is just another 4 drop… I ended up with a Grim Discovery since I have a lot of nice “dudes-that-are-also-removal” such as Gatekeeper of Malakir, Heartstabber and Giant Scorpion to re-use and with Reckless Scholar and Misty Rainforest the odds for getting a 2-1 of it is increased in my deck.

The matches was also not particular interesting, I beat a guy with red-white in the first round 2-0. I don’t remember much from the round except both games was pretty close (actually the tightest games during the whole drafts). Then in the semis I ran over a guy with green-red when he kept sketchy hands both games and then I played against another green-red deck in the finals, which weren’t particular close. He got blown out both games when I responded to his Vines of Vastwood on a fatty with a Hideous End which both times set him back to a position he couldn’t recoup from.

Todays lesson was just because you won the draft doesn’t mean you either drafted correctly or played well during the matches. Here I definitely felt that I got a little sloppy during the draft. Anyways, that was all for today. I hope you enjoyed it and I will see you next time.
