Commence operation Standard!

April 26, 2010

A thing I can say for sure is that we are looking up for tons of Standard action during the next couple of months. There are National Qualifiers, PTQs for Amsterdam and beginning in june the actual Nationals season starts. Just Standard all over the place.

For me it started last weekend with a National Qualifier. Since it was the day after the Rise of the Eldrazi release, I choose to not pay too much attention to the new cards and brung an old workhorse to game:

Jundtastic!

// Lands
    3 Forest
    3 Mountain
    4 Swamp
    2 Dragonskull Summit
    4 Savage Lands
    4 Verdant Catacombs
    4 Raging Ravine
    2 Lavaclaw Reaches
    1 Rootbound Crag

// Creatures
    4 Bloodbraid Elf
    2 Broodmate Dragon
    4 Putrid Leech
    4 Sprouting Thrinax
    2 Siege-Gang Commander

// Spells
    4 Lightning Bolt
    4 Blightning
    3 Maelstrom Pulse
    2 Terminate
    4 Bituminous Blast

// Sideboard
SB: 4 Duress
SB: 4 Goblin Ruinblaster
SB: 2 Malakir Bloodwitch
SB: 2 Chain Reaction
SB: 3 Deathmark

The list is based of Christophe Gregoir list from the GP Brussels Top8. Except from a little switch in the manabase the only difference is the Thought Hemorrhages has become Chain Reactions. I like the 4x Bituminous Blasts in the main, since they are good in the mirror, game deciding versus mono-red and they have become less bad against UW since nearly all lists play with Wall of Omens these days. It’s possible that Consume the Meek is better than Chain Reaction, further testing will tell I guess. All in all a solid choice for a National Qualifier.

I kinda tanked thou’, went 3-3. Played the mirror three times and lost all of them. Sigh. I’m not that bitter though, the mirrors were all close and nearly every game came down to small fractions, like me not having double red on turn 4 for Goblin Ruinblaster, not hitting my 5th land drop, me drawing a bunch of Putrid Leeches and Lightning Bolts while my opponent has Sprouting Thrinaxes and Blightning pre-board and stuff like that. There we be more chances to get my ass to Nationals, so I’m not too worried.

If it will be more Jund from my side this season is yet to determine. Jund is and will be after the full inclusion of Rise of the Eldrazi a major force if not the major force in Standard, but there are some interesting alternatives out there. Different Open the Vaults lists, Red decks, Eldrazi Monuments and much more. Could get interesting.

Until next time…
