Drafting with me #5 – RRR

May 24, 2010

Hi guys, I’m back with another draft walk-through, this time Rise of the Eldrazi edition! With out further ado, let’s get started:

Pack 1 pick 1:
    Spawning Breath
    Brimstone Mage
    Unified Will
    Frostwind Invoker
    Vent Sentinel
    Induce Despair
    Bloodrite Invoker
    Stomper Cub
–> Corpsehatch
    Kiln Fiend
    Repel the Darkness
    Halimar Wavewatch
    Hellion Eruption
    Plains (FOIL)
    Island

The draft started out with me chicken out a little. Hellion Eruption can be quite powerful and I saw seen games ending with just that card. Still, its a little situational and I went with the more stable Corpsehatch. I also like black in this format so that was a bonus. If you want to rant on me not picking the Hellion Eruption, that’s fine. I can take it 🙂 .

Pack 1 pick 2:
    Ancient Stirrings
    Shrivel
    Spawnsire of Ulamog
    Ogre Sentry
    Smite
    Kiln Fiend
–> Vendetta
    Hada Spy Patrol
    Repel the Darkness
    Halimar Wavewatch
    Harmless Assault
    Virulent Swipe
    Leaf Arrow
    Swamp

Spawnsire of Ulamog is certainly playable, but the decks that I draft in this format usually don’t want a 10 mana Eldrazi. This particular one usually doesn’t do anything versus a blue based deck either. Moving on, we have Hada Spy Patrol that I was very compiled into taking since it’s a) a fantastic card and b) it’s blue. Vendetta is however a very good removal spell and it lets us stay on colors.

Pack 1 pick 3:
    Demonic Appetite
    Gloomhunter
    Living Destiny
    Grotag Siege-Runner
    Deprive
    Battle Rampart
    Haze Frog
    Beastbreaker of Bala Ged
–> Hada Spy Patrol
    Knight of Cliffhaven
    Distortion Strike
    Prophetic Prism
    Forest

Here it came down to which road I wanted to take, either the blue one or green. Both the Beastbreaker and the Spy Patrol is about the same powerlevel. I opted for the Hada Spy Patrol here since I like blue more than green in this format. End of story.

Pack 1 pick 4:
    Artisan of Kozilek
    Guard Duty
    Evolving Wilds
    Eel Umbra
    Induce Despair
    Battle-Rattle Shaman
    Bloodrite Invoker
    Dawnglare Invoker (FOIL)
    Haze Frog
–> Narcolepsy
    Runed Servitor
    Forest

Once again it came down to raw power versus consistency. Narcolepsy easily outclasses Induce the Despair, but comparing it to Artisan of Kozilek… I played it safe once again and went with the solid removal spell.

Pack 1 pick 5:
    Death Cultist
    Skeletal Wurm
    Champion’s Drake
–> Gloomhunter
    Gravitational Shift
    Haze Frog
    Nema Siltlurker
    Prophetic Prism
    Affa Guard Hound
    Demystify
    Mountain

Graviational Shift is very hit-or-miss kind of card. Either it’s fantastic or it just doesn’t do anything. I went with Gloomhunter over Champion’s Drake once again consistency of raw power. It’s a really close pick thought, in the end picking Champion’s Drake here could be better but we can’t really tell right now if our deck ends up with a leveler theme.

Pack 1 pick 6:
    Goblin Tunneler
    Tajuru Preserver (FOIL)
–> Gloomhunter
    Vent Sentinel
    Evolving Wilds
    Zof Shade
    Hand of Emrakul
    Suffer the Past
    Oust
    Plains

Zof Shade isn’t too exciting and I didn’t feel like picking up Evolving Wilds either.

Pack 1 pick 7:
    Champion’s Drake
    Mnemonic Wall
    Hand of Emrakul
    Lavafume Invoker
    Reality Spasm
    Repel the Darkness
–> Sea Gate Oracle
    Prophetic Prism
    Forest

Reality Spasm is a card I really like for a blue-white deck, blue-red or, god forbid, blue-green decks. Blue-black decks tends to be more controly so the Reality Spasm isn’t as good for us right now.

Pack 1 pick 8:
    Jaddi Lifestrider
–> Mnemonic Wall
    Crab Umbra
    Caravan Escort
    Smite
    Reinforced Bulwark
    Gravity Well
    Island

Pack 1 pick 9:
    Unified Will
–> Frostwind Invoker
    Vent Sentinel
    Kiln Fiend
    Repel the Darkness
    Plains (FOIL)
    Island

A very nice wheel.

Pack 1 pick 10:
    Ancient Stirrings
    Ogre Sentry
    Smite
–> Repel the Darkness
    Harmless Assault
    Swamp

Pack 1 pick 11:
–> Demonic Appetite
    Living Destiny
    Battle Rampart
    Haze Frog
    Forest

Pack 1 pick 12:
    Guard Duty
    Haze Frog
–> Runed Servitor
    Forest

Pack 1 pick 13:
–> Death Cultist
    Demystify
    Mountain

Pack 1 pick 14:
–> Hand of Emrakul
    Plains

Pack 1 pick 15:
–> Forest

—— ROE ——

Pack 2 pick 1:
    Ancient Stirrings
    Magmaw
    Aura Gnarlid
    Forked Bolt
    Makindi Griffin
    Battle-Rattle Shaman
    Pennon Blade
    Pennon Blade (FOIL)
–> Last Kiss
    Snake Umbra
    Zulaport Enforcer
    Sea Gate Oracle
    Emerge Unscathed
    Hyena Umbra
    Mountain

This pack wasn’t too exciting for us. It came down to me to a choice between Last Kiss or Zulaport Enforcer. Our deck does have a lot of guys and evasion already so I opted with Last Kiss.

Pack 2 pick 2:
    Skeletal Wurm
    Vent Sentinel
    Evolving Wilds
    Eel Umbra
    Forked Bolt
–> Bloodrite Invoker
    Luminous Wake
    Stomper Cub
    Haze Frog
    See Beyond
    Renegade Doppelganger
    Totem-Guide Hartebeest
    Kozilek’s Predator
    Plains

Not too happy to pick up a Bloodrite Invoker as a second pick, but I guess that’s the play.

Pack 2 pick 3:
    Valakut Fireboar
    Lay Bare
    Soul’s Attendant
    Growth Spasm
    Sphinx-Bone Wand
    Aura Finesse
    Aura Finesse (FOIL)
    Pathrazer of Ulamog
    Null Champion
–> Enclave Cryptologist
    Perish the Thought
    Eland Umbra
    Forest

Envlace Cryptologist is a very good card. Much better than Null Champion which would otherwise be the pick.

Pack 2 pick 4:
    Lone Missionary
    Shrivel
    Might of the Masses
    Raid Bombardment
–> Regress
    Nema Siltlurker
    Glory Seeker
    Escaped Null
    Bloodthrone Vampire
    Surrakar Spellblade
    Demystify
    Mountain

Pack 2 pick 5:
    Lone Missionary
    Might of the Masses
    Ogre Sentry
    Contaminated Ground
    Goblin Arsonist
    Spider Umbra
–> Bala Ged Scorpion
    Shared Discovery
    Harmless Assault
    Traitorous Instinct
    Forest

Pack 2 pick 6:
    Valakut Fireboar
    Demonic Appetite
    See Beyond
    Glory Seeker
–> Nirkana Cutthroat
    Fissure Vent
    Totem-Guide Hartebeest
    Ikiral Outrider
    Plains
    Mortician Beetle

The last couple of picks has been pretty straightforward with not much of choices to make. Picking Nirkana Cutthroat here is not different.

Pack 2 pick 7:
    Bramblesnap
    Grotag Siege-Runner
    Puncturing Light
    Perish the Thought
    Glory Seeker
–> Essence Feed
    Fissure Vent
    Merfolk Observer
    Forest

Pack 2 pick 8:
    Living Destiny
    Stalwart Shield-Bearers
–> Enatu Golem
    Nema Siltlurker
    Perish the Thought
    Lagac Lizard
    Fleeting Distraction
    Forest

Pack 2 pick 9:
    Ancient Stirrings
    Battle-Rattle Shaman
    Pennon Blade
–> Sea Gate Oracle
    Emerge Unscathed
    Hyena Umbra
    Mountain

Seeing the Sea Gate Oracle wheel here indicates to me that the pack are overall quite weak and it isn’t just we are out of position in the draft. Good to know.

Pack 2 pick 10:
–> Evolving Wilds
    Eel Umbra
    Luminous Wake
    Haze Frog
    Totem-Guide Hartebeest
    Plains

Toss up. I wasn’t sure if I would play Eel Umbra in this semi-controling build so I just went with the solid Evolving Wilds.

Pack 2 pick 11:
    Aura Finesse
    Aura Finesse (FOIL)
–> Perish the Thought
    Eland Umbra
    Forest

Pack 2 pick 12:
–> Shrivel
    Raid Bombardment
    Demystify
    Mountain

Pack 2 pick 13:
–> Shared Discovery
    Harmless Assault
    Forest

Pack 2 pick 14:
–> Demonic Appetite
    Plains

Pack 2 pick 15:
–> Forest

—— ROE ——

Pack 3 pick 1:
    Champion’s Drake
–> Keening Stone
    Emrakul’s Hatcher
    Deprive
    Shrivel (FOIL)
    Might of the Masses
    Battle Rampart
    Brood Birthing
    Null Champion
    Repel the Darkness
    Eland Umbra
    Emerge Unscathed
    Traitorous Instinct
    Not of This World
    Plains

That a boy! Keening Stone is an absurd bomb and a perfect finisher for our deck. Just what the doctor ordered.

Pack 3 pick 2:
    Wildheart Invoker
    Lightmine Field
    Cadaver Imp
    Soulsurge Elemental
    Skittering Invasion
    Soulbound Guardians
    Hand of Emrakul
    Lavafume Invoker
    Sea Gate Oracle
    Essence Feed
–> Halimar Wavewatch
    Knight of Cliffhaven
    Hyena Umbra
    Swamp

We are quite heavy on the 3-drops right now so Halimar Wavewatch is the pick here over Cadaver Imp and Sea Gate Oracle. I actually like the Wavewatch quite a bit, even if you can’t islandwalk your opponent to death. Overall a very solid card.

Pack 3 pick 3:
    Hedron-Field Purists
    Champion’s Drake
    Jwari Scuttler
    Stalwart Shield-Bearers
    Bloodrite Invoker
    Wall of Omens
    Ogre Sentry
–> Skywatcher Adept
    Smite
    Suffer the Past
    Warmonger’s Chariot
    Spider Umbra
    Swamp

Pack 3 pick 4:
    Lone Missionary
    Ancient Stirrings
    Pennon Blade
    Shrivel
    Mammoth Umbra
    Luminous Wake
    Raid Bombardment
    Kiln Fiend
    Repel the Darkness
–> Halimar Wavewatch
    Fleeting Distraction
    Island

Pack 3 pick 5:
    Hedron-Field Purists
    Guard Duty
–> Induce Despair
    Battle-Rattle Shaman
    Growth Spasm
    Puncturing Light
    Zulaport Enforcer
    Lavafume Invoker
    Oust
    Rapacious One
    Island

We have plenty of guys and evasion so Zulaport Enforcer isn’t too important to have in our deck. Extra removal in form of Induce Despair is something we don’t complain about. A little hilarious to see that 2 Hedron-Field Purists have passed by. Our deck isn’t too concerned about that card but I can tell from experience than green or white based aggressive decks can fold pretty hard to that card.

Pack 3 pick 6:
    Kabira Vindicator
    Spawning Breath
    Nighthaze
    Akoum Boulderfoot
–> Cadaver Imp
    Kor Line-Slinger
    Aura Finesse
    Hand of Emrakul
    Ikiral Outrider
    Swamp

Pack 3 pick 7:
    Irresistible Prey
–> Ogre’s Cleaver
    Battle-Rattle Shaman
    Battle Rampart
    Snake Umbra
    Merfolk Observer
    Totem-Guide Hartebeest
    Bloodthrone Vampire
    Island

Pack 3 pick 8:
    Guard Duty
    Unified Will
    Living Destiny
–> Kor Line-Slinger
    Hand of Emrakul
    Perish the Thought
    Affa Guard Hound
    Island

Pack 3 pick 9:
    Brood Birthing
    Repel the Darkness
    Eland Umbra
    Emerge Unscathed
–> Traitorous Instinct
    Not of This World
    Plains

Pack 3 pick 10:
    Lightmine Field
    Soulsurge Elemental
    Hand of Emrakul
    Essence Feed
–> Hyena Umbra
    Swamp

Pack 3 pick 11:
–> Jwari Scuttler
    Stalwart Shield-Bearers
    Ogre Sentry
    Smite
    Swamp

Pack 3 pick 12:
    Ancient Stirrings
    Raid Bombardment
–> Fleeting Distraction
    Island

Pack 3 pick 13:
–> Battle-Rattle Shaman
    Lavafume Invoker
    Island

Pack 3 pick 14:
    Aura Finesse
–> Swamp

Pack 3 pick 15:
–> Island

The packs ended up a little shallow at the end but we certainly picked up a nice pool of cards. I wish that I had a Deprive (love that card) but it was not to be this time.  There wasn’t that many choices to make in deck construction and this was I submitted at the end:

9x Swamp
8x Island
1x Evolving Wilds
1x Enclave Cryptologist
1x Skywatcher Adept
2x Halimar Wavewatch
1x Hada Spy Patrol
2x Gloomhunter
2x Sea Gate Oracle
1x Nirkana Cuttroath
1x Cadavar Imp
1x Bloodrite Invoker
1x Bala Ged Scorpion
1x Mnemonic Wall
1x Frostwind Invoker
1x Keening Stone
1x Vendetta
1x Regress
1x Induce Despair
1x Last Kiss
1x Narcolepsy
1x Corpsehatch

I ended up taking the whole draft, only dropping a game in the first match thanks to Drana (she makes that happen quite a bit, doesn’t she?) so I was very content with the draft. Looking back I’m glad I didn’t picked up those Champion’s Drake since our deck ended up fairly controlling. The blue-black archetype can be quite aggressive when you have Null Champions, Zulaport Enforcers and Venerated Teacher, which I didn’t have in this draft.

That was all for today. Hope you liked it and I will see you next time!
