Have you tried Winston Draft?

March 26, 2011

Hi guys, just a short post regarding a format I want to promote, Winston Draft. If you have never heard of it, there is a great walk through video by Mark Rosewater:

It’s by far the best way I know of playing limited between 2 players. It’s very skillful due to the heads up nature of the format. In a Booster Draft, hate picking or generally trying to stab a player next to you at the cost of your own picks is in general not a profiting strategy. To maximize your own chance of 3-0 a draft, you usually are better off just focusing on your own deck.

The same can’t be said about Winston drafting. Now there is just one opponent you have to beat which means that hate drafting, strategy and color switching is actually what you want to look out for. If it’s looking like your opponent is going for a aggressive strategy, starting to aggressively picking up creatures like Horned Turtle and it’s like is a good idea.

For example, I did a Kamigawa Block Winston Draft some time ago. I noticed that my opponent was most likely heading into red, so I picked up a Sokenzan Bruiser fairly early. But my opponent knew that the pile I took up had a Sokenzan Bruiser in it which in turn inclined him to get out of red. Situations like that makes the format very interesting and skillful. Not only do you need to draft a good deck on your own, you need to pay attention to what your opponent is up to. And as well thinking about what cards you show your opponent during the draft.

The powerlevel of the decks? The decks ends up being a little more powerful than your average Sealed deck but not as good as in a Booster Draft. You definitley get to sculpt your card pool more than a Sealed Deck. But at the same time you don’t get to see as many cards as in a Booster Draft and hate drafting is actually legit, so that’s why.

So all in all, a format I highly recommend you to try out when you can.
